Scale overview: The Cultural Christian: A Qualitative Questionnaire (CCQC) consists of a set of questions designed to identify how closely an interviewee aligns with the characteristics of a cultural Christian, as opposed to someone who actively adheres to the core tenets of Christianity and participates in a recognized Christian denomination or group.

The answers can help differentiate between cultural Christians and those deeply committed to core Christian beliefs and active in a Christian community.

QUESTIONS
1. What Christian holidays do you celebrate?
Briefly, how do you celebrate those holidays? For example, do you attend church?
2. What Christian ministries do you participate in? For example, do you sing or play an instrument in a church or serve as a volunteer in a church ministry?
3. What Christian practices are an important part of your life? For example, prayer, bible reading, or regular church attendance.
4. What Christian moral values are important to you? For example, what are your beliefs about the following moral issues Christian leaders preach about?
Abortion
Contraception
Divorce and remarriage
Sexual relationships outside marriage
Same-sex relationships and marriage
5. What are your views about Christian virtues such as the following?
Demonstrating compassion for the poor
Forgiving those who hurt you
Expressing gratitude
Expressing generosity
Living a humble life
6. What are your views about Christian doctrines or beliefs? Following are a few examples:
Jesus is the Son of God.
God is a triune being referred to as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
Jesus was born to Mary who was a virgin.
People who do not accept Jesus as their personal saviour will spend the afterlife in hell.
God heals some people in response to prayer without any human interventions.
Are there any other beliefs that are highly important to you?
CATEGORIZING ANSWERS
These categories help differentiate cultural Christians from committed ones. Please add a note and reference in the comments section. Experienced users may further divide responses of committed Christians into conservative and progressive beliefs and values.
Positive indicators of Cultural Christianity as the primary type of Christianity
Holidays (H) Christian holidays like Christmas and Easter are mostly celebrated as secular occasions
Practices (P) Few or limited participation in Christian practices like baptisms, church weddings, church funerals.
Ministries (M) Participation in Christian ministries focuses on the activity rather than worship e.g., singling in a choir, playing in a church band or orchestra, helping with community projects
Christian Values- Secular (CVS) Endorses several Christian values but not necessarily from a scriptural foundation e.g., values forgiveness, generosity, peacemaking, social justice
Christian Morality-Secular (CMS) Provides secular reasons for moral beliefs regarding various topics such as abortion or same-sex marriage.
Negative Indicators – Features not commonly associated with Culture Christianity
Christian Supernaturalism (CS) Expresses strong beliefs in Christianity’s supernatural realm such as beliefs in angels, demons, heaven, and hell.
Christian Theology (CT) Expresses strong beliefs in core theological claims such as belief in a personal relational God as a triune being of Father, Son, and Holy spirit.
Christian Doctrine (CD) Expresses a strong commitment to the beliefs and practices of an identifiable branch of Christianity such as Roman Catholic, Orthodox, or one of the Protestant denominations or groups.
Miracles (M) Expresses beliefs in divine causes of events in the natural world such as healing miracles or weather events like hurricanes
Christian Values- Biblical (CVB) Endorses several Christian values based on the Bible or church teaching e.g., values forgiveness, generosity, peacemaking, social justice
Christian Morality-Biblical (CMB) Provides biblical or faith-based reasons for moral beliefs regarding various topics such as abortion or same-sex marriage.
Other Religious Identity (ORI) Does not specifically identify with another religion or expression of spirituality
Not Religious (NR) Does not specifically identify as nonreligious, none, done, agnostic, or an atheist (unless affirming they are cultural Christians)
Psychometric properties: This qualitative measure has been proposed and not yet tested in research.
