Scale overview: The Interpretation of Death Scale (IOD) is a 14-item multidimensional measure of adult’s self-reported interpretations of death and related concepts such as afterlife beliefs, suffering, and meaning of life.

All items were originally phrased in Dutch and have been translated by

the first author. In order to explicate what is meant by God, we wrote above this scale:

“It is important that, where ‘God’ is mentioned, we do not necessarily

mean the Christian God. You can also read ‘the creator’, ‘Allah’, ‘the

eternal’ or another indication for who or what you consider to be God

or the divine”.

Internal consistency Cronbach alpha values for the three subscales

  Religious = .96

  Rational = .73

  Personal = .63

Construct validity: Factor Analysis supported 3 factors
